MARTA BAKOWSKI

France

Marta Bakowski’s designs are a celebration of colours and materials, two predominating elements which are often the starting point of her projects. Her objects follow simple & graphical shapes with an Elementary functionality, thus leaving room for tactility & expressive qualities while encouraging imagination, interpretation and appropriation.

By working with dualities and de-contextualisations, her designs are a game of oppositions, contrasts and hijacks. Thus, natural materials meet with technological ones, Crafts flirt with Industry and primitive inspirations transform into pop and modern translations.

For the designer it is a matter of elaborating a language thanks to which objects acquire a function that goes beyong practicality. By creating links and strong evocations through the development of aesthetical values, her aim is to touch the ‘emotionnal’ and encourage relationships between users and object.

POOL

France

Pool was founded in 2010 by Léa Padovani (1981) and Sébastien Kieffer (1982), and is a Paris-based creative studio which takes design beyond furniture, encompassing graphics, artistic direction, and interior architecture.

Things took off for the duo with the Nouvelle Vague exhibition in Milan in 2011, then the VIA (design promotional body) awarded them its label for their recessed ceiling lighting system, and Cassina turned to them to produce a showcase for the work of Charlotte Perriand. These various facets of their work serve to stimulate the pluri-disciplinary reflection around artisanal collaboration, which is present in each stage of the realization of a project. As such, the clean lines that characterize the play of volumes find physical form thanks to an exchange, with POOL overseeing the various skills through to the finished article. A table, a visual identity, or a restaurant: All of these can simultaneously illustrate the new interpretation of material and the images of a given story, which always deals with simplicity. Without stylistic verbosity nor ostentatious effects, this can be read for what it is; autonomous, independent, self-produced.

Some of our clients: Petite Friture, Habitat, CVL Contract, Cassina, The Future Perfect, La Redoute, Extrait café, Versant édition, La Chance.

JACQUES EMILE RUHLMANN

France

La Chance’s style has definitely its roots in the Art Deco movement. The brand tries to make a contemporary transcription of its spirit and values particularly through re-editions of Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann pieces, one of the undisputed masters of this period who defined the codes of a new modern area in the 1920’s.

Ruhlmann was an inventor of forms who created unique and luxurious pieces. He worked with the best craftsmen of the time: cabinetmakers, marquetry specialists, gilders, lacquerers and upholsterers to create specific works to each of his clients. He used to sign his creations by appending his elegant signature next to the one of the craftsman who had made the work. Ruhlmann was both a creator and a producer but also an editor and a gallery owner for the cream of the contemporary customer base.

By working with designers with diverse backgrounds as well as Ruhlmann did with several talents, La Chance gives an interpretation of Ruhlmann’s spirit who used to combine tradition and modernity, and wishes to recall his passion for noble materials.

STUDIO BLING

France

We created our studio bling. in 2018.

Our work reflects and defines our view of design : an artistic approach of the discipline. Starting from daily observations, our productions are focused on translating a reality marked by memories, sensations, past moments. We are trying to arouse emotions and reflections through contemplative objects, as witnesses to a certain temporality.
At first, we didn't intend to work specifically in object design : initially, we wanted to focus on painting (Anaïs) and publicity (Charles). Our wish was to exercise in an artistic field, mixing manual art and plastic expression.

What attracted us to object design is that we can easily mix different artistic disciplines : architecture, graphics, painting, modeling, etc. This multidisciplinary aspect can be found in the reflection and conception of a project, but also in the creation, manufacture, and production of an object.

We are more from an artistic background than an industrial one, which explains our plastic approach to the object. This aspect has often been criticized during our studies, but we defend it because it's about how we work, think and produce. Furthermore, this is not incompatible with dealing with specific industrial issues.

Our overall and artistic approach can also explain why we want to work in detail on our objects, and on what surrounds and accompanies them : references, texts (history, inspiration), illustrations, collages, graphics, typography, packaging, etc.
We pay close attention to details : in our opinion, to be attentive to every aspect of an object is a great quality for a designer ; it's mainly what makes us appreciate a designer’s work.

In the conception part of our work, we are looking for and feeding on many current references in object design, but we are also inspired by old objects. As much as contemporary objects, we are very interested in the objects of the past, forgotten objects, because they reflect the evolution of history of art, the different past art movements. This is a very rich source of inspiration in our work.

We are curious, we can appreciate very diverse things, past or present. As a result of these various inspirations, we don't want to reduce our studio bling. to a specific category of design, a specific type of object or material.

To us, design must reflect openness, curiosity, multi-discipline, it's a way of expression that can take all possible forms.
